New York Police Department Hold Up Orphan’s U Visa

The New York Daily News recently ran an excellent piece detailing the struggles of a young New York City  lady who is unable to obtain a U Visa because the New York Police Department has been refusing to issue a certification since May 2009.

The young lady became an orphan when, as a first grader, her father killed her mother and himself.   The lady witnessed the crime and told the police of it.  Based upon her assistance to the police, she should be able to obtain a U Visa in the United States.  However, the New York Police Department needs to complete a certification that the lady did assist them in their investigation.  So far, the NYPD has refused to issue the certification saying that it is still going through a 20-step review process.   Let’s hope the NYPD issues the certification soon.

If you have been a victim of a crime and have assisted the police in their investigation, you may be eligible for the U Visa.  If you think you are eligible, please contact a New York City immigration lawyer.
